Providing a welcoming and relaxing arrival experience were critical drivers for this new entry point to the Methodist Medical Center campus, frequented by patients receiving radiation therapy in the Hamilton facility. The medical center commissioned hand-blown glass artwork for the two-story entry lobby and the donor recognition wall.
Lighting design involved careful collaboration with the artists during mock-ups of the glass and during final installation. LED technology, still relatively new in the art lighting world, required vetting for color quality, thermal management, consistency, and controllability.
Seamless integration of LED lighting with architectural casework details resulted in an effective illumination strategy that still allowed easy access to power supplies and fixtures for maintenance.
The glass entry canopy is illuminated with the MMCI signature blue color, yet can be programmed seasonally with other colors from the central lighting control network.
Pedestrian lighting takes advantage of contemporary lanterns with limited uplight, rhythmically aligned with pocket parks and campus monumental signage containing accent lighting features. The skybridge and access corridors use narrow aperture recessed linear sources for simple support of the high level finishes. Design services performed while with another firm.
